To see if a license server is running on a specific computer, you can enter the command abaqus licensing lmstat -c port@licenseserverhost where licenseserverhost is the hostname of the license server that you want to query. If the license server is using a port that is not between 27000 and 27009, you must specify the port number as well. Online Documentation. The full ABAQUS documentation (latest version) can be accessed on gra-vdi as shown in the following steps. In the address bar type about:config (hit enter) - click the Accept the risk button. In the search bar type uniqe then double click privacy.fileuniqueorigin to change true to false.

The installation procedure and file system layout for Abaqus has changed significantly in the 2016 release. It is now necessary to run 3 separate installers for a complete Abaqus installation. Please be sure to run all 3 installers in order to get a fully functional Abaqus installation.
If you get errors referring to IOError ... Permission denied... when you launch Abaqus, make sure you're launching it from a writable folder and/or launch it as a user with administrative privileges.

Requirements

This Abaqus installation procedure is only authorized for MIT student/faculty/staff users. It requires a 64 bit operating system (Windows or Linux). See Prerequisites for more details.

Note:

  • You will not need to register with Simulia or download anything from their web site.
  • You will not need to update the annual license file, this is handled on the server.
  • Running Abaqus this way requires that you maintain network connectivity, and requires use of the MIT VPN if you are off the MIT campus.

Switching an existing Abaqus installation to get licenses from the Central License Server

If you have machines where Abaqus is already installed and you want to get licenses from the Central License Server, you don't need to perform the installation steps below. You just need to edit the abaquslm_license_file parameter line in a local Abaqus environment file abaqus_v6.env (release 6.14-3 and earlier) or custom_v6.env (release 2016) as shown here. This parameter is set in a line in the .env file beginning with

abaquslm_license_file=

(It's near the end of the abaqus_v6.env file which is fairly long. custom_v6.env is short).

The default location for abaqus_v6.env in release 6.14-3 is

  • C:SIMULIAAbaqus6.14-3SMAsite
    for Windows
  • <parent_dir>/6.14-3/SMA/site
for Linux (where <parent_dir> is the Abaqus parent directory)

The default location of custom_v6.env in release 2016 is

  • C:Program FilesDassault SystemesSimulationServicesV6R2016xwin_b64SMAsite
    for Windows
  • /usr/DassaultSystemes/SimulationServices/V6R2016x/Linux_a64/SMA/site
    for Linux

Abaqus Installation

You need to maintain network connectivity during installation and it you're off campus, you need to be running the VPN before you run the installers. If you're on campus and using wireless, be sure you're connected to MIT Secure, other networks won't work.

In certain usage modes, Abaqus requires access to system C, C++ and FORTRAN compilers. Installation and configuration of these is beyond the scope of this document; please consult the Abaqus documentation for further information. Abaqus is configured to use the Intel compilers by default; it is usually possible to use the gnu compilers instead by editing
/usr/DassaultSystemes/SimulationServices/V6R2016x/Linux_a64/SMA/site/lnx86_64.env as follows:
  1. Change ifort to gfortran on the fortCmd line and make sure that g++ is on the cppCmd line.
  2. Remove gnu-incompatible compiler flags from the compile_fortran line (-V, -auto, -mP2OPT_hpo_vec_divbyzero=F, -extend_source, -fpp, -WB).
  3. Add -lgfortran to the link_sl and link_exe lines.
You need to launch Abaqus CAE or Abaqus Viewer from a directory where you have write permission.

The Abaqus launch command is abaqus (or abaqus cae for the GUI, abaqus viewer for the viewer), in the /var/DassaultSystemes/SIMULIA/Commands directory if you selected the default CAE commands directory.

You may need to set the XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS environment variable to 1 in the launch terminal first if the Abaqus windows are washed out and translucent. You may run into other windowing artifacts unless you log in with a basic graphical session that disables advanced visual effects. Details for how to do this are beyond the scope of this article.

After installation is complete, you can delete the downloaded zip files and unzipped contents to save space.

Extras

An archive containing various extras including CAD associative interface plugins is here. Unzip this in a temporary location; instructions for installation and use of the various components are in pdf files located in subdirectories. Some of the associative interfaces are also located in the
AM_SIM_Abaqus_Extend.AllOS1SIMULIA_Abaqus_Associative_Interfaces1 folder of the abaqus_2016.zip archive.

F.2.10 Do I have to update the network license server when I install a new release of Abaqus?

Yes, if the new release of Abaqus uses a later version of FLEXnet Licensing than your existing license server. The Abaqus 6.9 Extended Functionality release uses FLEXnet Licensing Version 10.8.7. Abaqus 6.9 also used FLEXnet Licensing Version 10.8.7; therefore, you do not have to update a license server that was installed with Abaqus 6.9. If you have a version of FLEXnet Licensing earlier than Version 10.8.7 installed on your system, you should use the licensing installation procedure to automatically upgrade the license server; you must upgrade a license server that was installed with a previous Abaqus release. If you have an existing license server that uses a version of FLEXnet Licensing higher than Version 10.8.7, you should use the procedure described in Updating an Abaqus license file, Section 3.2, to update your license file without overwriting the existing license server. For more information, see Licensing installation procedure, Section 2.1.2. If your Abaqus license file is integrated with FLEXnet license files for other products using a combined license file, you must ensure that the lmgrd version meets the FLEXnet version compatibility rules (listed in Appendix I of the FLEXnet Licensing End User Guide Version 10.8).

Abaqus License Status Command

You can check under Licensing on the Support page at www.simulia.com for the FLEXnet Licensing End User Guide and to see if a maintenance delivery includes a later version of FLEXnet Licensing.
